Academic Projects

Love, love, love research. I'll say it again, I love research. I HATE putting it all together for someone to judge. Read, fine; talk about, fine; present, fine; grade and judge, only if you don't mind me hissing at you. Unfortunately I can't exactly hiss at my professors if I want to work with them... Most people frown on that mode of expression. So I'm working on two major projects, and I should soon get started on the third less major term paper (only less major because I have a ton of extra credit and it's only worth 20 points as opposed to 400 or 50% of my grade).... Anyway, I presented my research for the African Women's project, so I have a solid outline in my PowerPoint. It's the first one due, so I should get started on it. Instead I'm blogging because I'm annoyed at Apple again. Are we surprised? My annoyance: Pages for iPad can't do footnotes. Say what!? It's targeting students, and yet it can't do footnotes. Durrr... My problem is majorly exacerbated by the fact that both my laptops are breaking. As long as I don't bump the screen of the one, it works. I tried fixing it, but I only managed to make the screen casing funky without solving the problem of the display not working half the time. I think the back panel is loose on the other one, because it has trouble recognizing the power cable and won't recognize the monitor plug-in at all. Still usable for about five minutes until the battery dies.... Or if I don't move it one I get it to recognize that it is plugged in. So I've been doing almost everything on my iPad, and it's mostly been okay. Hard to multi-task, but doable (unless you're using a website, because safari thinks it has to reload every single time you go back to it from another screen). Except, footnotes! I need footnotes! I've solved the "Pages fails at outlines" problem, but footnotes are an issue. I read one suggestion to use it as a light editor and just put in simple paranthetical citations for now... Which I will probably do, but I guarantee when I'm going through and editing my papers and putting the dumb things in, you'll hear from me again. I hate dealing with citations... Especially in large numbers. Oh, but exciting news on the research front! While there is absolutely NOTHING done on my research topic for my LBJ class, I found sources I can use! I guess I can be less offended that Michigan's Native Americans in the 1960s have been ignored by academics since all of Michigan also appears to have been ignored as well... But that's another rant. All I have to say is "Thank you Bently Historical Library!" Those people are awesome there too.... Unless you mess with their books. One guy got chewed out by the nice librarian for how he was handling his book, but considering the stuff they have in their archives, I totally don't blame them. I'm so excited I'll be working so close to them next year! And I got ahold of what I hope will be enough primary sources on the 1960s programs... I might need to go back again, but I've been having some success finding old newspapers on google, so we'll see. And in procrastinating I have used up all the time I gave myself this morning for working on stuff. Oops. There is the rest of today though, and I'm sure I'll be up until ungodly hours again being frustrated by writing. At least it's easier at home with an actual keyboard. The worst part about the virtual one is the stupid auto-correct correcting words that don't need to be corrected. (I do appreciate being able to type don't without having to find the apostrophe though... So I leave it on... Guess I shouldn't complain.) Happy Monday all! .... I was going to upload a picture... Then I remembered Safari isn't integrated with the native Photo app so it can't upload anything... Seriously, Apple, great product, now let's look at what people actually want to do with it, shall we? Grr.
